I’m always on the look out for great new bakeries within the Toronto area (last week showcased TORI’S BAKESHOP)! This week, I’ve found a great new bakery that’s put a very interesting twist on the delicious cupcake. Introducing PRAIRIE GIRL BAKERY – the old-fashioned delicious cupcake that just happens to be vegan.

I was introduced to PRAIRIE GIRL BAKERY through an information session on the current Toronto event VEGGIELICIOUS. PGB aims to make delicious baked goods the old-fashioned way. Utilizing only all-natural ingredients, PGB ensures to avoid artificial ingredients, shortening or lard. Day-old food is absolutely never sold – unsold baked goods are donated to Toronto’s Second Harvest for distribution to agencies supporting people in need. Talk about a company with a heart.

The lady behind PGB is actually a prairie girl! Jean Blacklock hails from Saskatoon and comes from a background of law and banking. Since the commencement of PGB in April 2011, the company has followed Blacklock’s philosophy – “baking; customer service; operations“. A commitment to your order, a commitment to quality, and a commitment to your satisfaction is the PGB way.

The thing that interested me about PGB? Their vegan cupcakes! I’ve never even heard of vegan cupcakes until Blacklock mentioned them, and now I’m more than intrigued!

The vegan cupcakes are made with the best quality vegan products – think soy baking blend, soy milk, pure vegetable oil, natural extracts, real fruit, dark cocoa, soy cream cheese, and egg replacement. PGB does their best to avoid cross-contamination with their other baked goods. PGB is 100% committed to ensuring your vegan cupcakes are up to par.

Vegan cupcakes is such an interesting innovation for the holiday season. While it’s very simple to just treat holiday guests to non-vegan cupcakes, PGB is offering a great alternative to those who partake in a different food lifestyle. Available in regular sized and minis (which are wonderful tiny substitutes, or perfect for sampling!)

So, why did PGB start to make a vegan line? There was a customer demand for it! Furthermore, there were several vegans on the PGB team who absolutely adored the idea. Since their introduction, there has been a wonderful response to the vegan cupcakes – from both hosts and bridal parties, the vegan cupcakes are a hit!
Available vegan cupcake flavours include:
  • Red Velvet with “Cream Cheese” Icing
  • Red Velvet with  Chocolate “Cream Cheese” Icing with a swirl of Vanilla Bean Icing
  • Chocolate Cupcakes with icings of: Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Peanut Butter
  • Vanilla Cupcakes with icings of: Vanilla, Chocolate, Toasted Coconut, Strawberry.

VEGGIELICIOUS is a two-week celebration of cuisine that features gourmet meals and deals at restaurants, cafes, and bakeries in the Toronto area.
